چکیده

Field theories in the presence of branes encounter localized divergences that renormalize brane couplings. The sources of these brane-localized divergences are understood as arising either from broken translation invariance, or from short distance singularities as the brane thickness vanishes. While the former are generated only by quantum corrections, the latter can appear even at the classical level. Using as an example six-dimensional scalar field theory in the background of a 3-brane, we show how to interpret such classical divergences by the usual regularization and renormalization procedure of quantum field theory. In our example, the zero thickness divergences are logarithmic, and lead classically to non-trivial renormalization group flows for the brane couplings. We construct the tree level renormalization group equations for these couplings as well as the one-loop corrections to these flows from bulk-to-brane renormalization effects. ∗[email protected][email protected]

Classical Renormalization of Codimension-two Brane Couplings

The curvature on codimension-two and higher branes is not regular for arbitrary matter sources. Nevertheless, the low-energy theory for an observer on such a brane should be welldefined and independent to any regularization procedure. This is achieved via appropriate classical renormalization of the brane couplings, and leads to a natural hierarchy between standard model couplings and couplings...

On Boundary Perturbations in Liouville Theory and Brane Dynamics in Noncritical String Theories

We study certain relevant boundary perturbations of Liouville theory and discuss implications of our results for the brane dynamics in noncritical string theories. Our results include (i) There exist monodromies in the parameter μB of the Neumann-type boundary condition that can create an admixture represented by the Dirichlet type boundary condition, for example. (ii) Certain renormalization g...

Bulk versus brane running couplings

Abstract A simplified higher dimensional Randall-Sundrum-like model in 6 dimensions is considered. It has been observed previously by Goldberger and Wise that in such a self-interacting scalar theory on the bulk with a conical singularity there is mixing of renormalization of 4d brane couplings with that of the bulk couplings. We study the influence of the running bulk couplings on the running ...

Renormalization Group Flows in the Deformed Ads/cft Correspondence

In the AdS/CFT correspondence motion in the radial direction of the AdS space is identified with renormalization group flow in the field theory. For the N=4 YangMills theory this motion is trivial. More interesting examples of renormalization group flow occur when the N=4 theory is deformed. Aspects of the flows are discussed for the N=4 theory on its moduli space, and deformed to N=2 in the in...

The Effective Field Theory of Codimension-two Branes

Distributional sources of matter on codimension-two and higher branes are only well-defined as regularized objects. Nevertheless, intuition from effective field theory suggests that the low-energy physics on such branes should be independent of any high-energy regularization scheme. In this paper, we address this issue in the context of a scalar field model where matter fields (the standard mod...
